New skip­pers for Test se­ries

SOUTH Africa and Eng­land will be un­der new man­age­ment this week, with the news that Faf du Plessis will miss Thurs­day’s first Test at Lord’s.

The South Africa cap­tain will stay at home af­ter the “dif­fi­cult’’ birth of his first child, with Dean El­gar step­ping up to lead his coun­try for the first time.

El­gar will now join Joe Root in mak­ing his Test cap­taincy de­but when a de­pleted South Africa take on Eng­land in the first of four Tests.

South Africa are al­ready with­out AB de Vil­liers, who has put lim­ited- overs cricket ahead of Tests, and the in­jured Dale Steyn.

Du Plessis plans to re­turn later this week with a view to play­ing in the sec­ond Test at Trent Bridge on July 14.
