Claims pass halfway mark
INSURER Suncorp says it has finalised over half the claims lodged from Cyclone Debbie, while one in six home repairs have been completed.
Suncorp says it is finalising around 100 claims a day in the wake of the cyclone that hit the Queensland coast in March and caused widespread flooding in Queensland and northern NSW, leaving an insurance bill of over $ 1 billion. The insurer says its response has been twice as fast as its response to Cyclone Yasi in 2011.
Only one in six repairs of homes damaged by Debbie have been completed so far, and a Suncorp spokesman said claims were expected to be finalised at a faster rate than repairs.
However, most damaged homes were in an advanced state of repair, considering the generally enhanced response time, the spokesman said, and no figures were available to compare the rate of repairs against the aftermath of Yasi.
