Call for ACCC to probe

OP P O S I T I O N tr e a s u r y spokesman Scott Emer­son has writ­ten to the Aus­tralian Com­pe­ti­tion and Con­sumer Com­mis­sion re­quest­ing that the watch­dog in­ves­ti­gate al­le­ga­tions of price goug­ing by sta­te­owned elec­tric­ity gen­er­a­tors.

It comes af­ter Fed­eral En­ergy Min­is­ter Josh Fry­den­berg ac­cused the La­bor State Govern­ment of in­creas­ing elec­tric­ity prices to boost rev­enue.

Queens­land En­ergy Min­is­ter Mark Bai­ley has de­nied the al­le­ga­tions, claim­ing the at­tacks were “purely po­lit­i­cal”.

In his let­ter to ACCC chair Rod Simms, Mr Emer­son said there was sig­nif­i­cant concern that govern­ment- owned elec­tric­ity gen­er­a­tors CS En­ergy and Stan­well had been us­ing their mar­ket power to in­crease whole­sale prices.
