Raiders seek their green light

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT - CHRISTIAN NICOLUSSI

THE Green Machine is known for hitting top gear late in the season – and Blake Austin hopes Canberra can finally release the handbrake on Friday night.

Already three wins outside the top eight, the Raiders need a victory against St George Illawarra on Friday night to keep their spluttering season alive, and are aware they also need to face Melbourne – twice – and premiers Cronulla in the run home to September.

If any team is capable of a grandstand finish, it’s Canberra who won their final 10 games of the regular season last year, six of their final seven matches in 2012, eight of their last nine in 2010 and seven of their last nine in 2008.

“We know the challenge we face at the moment, and if you’re a punter, you’d back Canberra to get out of it because your Average Joe can see if things start to click for us, we can be a pretty formidable side,’’ Austin said.

“That’s the most frustrating part I suppose.

“Not much has changed from this year to last year. We’re playing a similar brand of footy, but unfortunately we’ve got ourselves into the spot we’re in, and some things that were sticking last year aren’t quite there at the moment.”
