Minister says MPs locked up in ‘ jail’

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

A FEDERAL Minister and father of five has labelled Parliament a “jail” for its long and inflexible hours and has urged a more family- friendly approach.

The call for reform by Resources Minister Matt Canavan ( pictured) comes as LNP president Gary Spence today uses a speech to the party’s state convention to pitch a shake- up to Parliament to allow families more time at home, attract more quality candidates and save taxpayers money.

“You can’t escape the jail,’’ Senator Canavan said, revealing how some MPs jokingly described Parliament House. “You can’t leave the House because there could be a ( vote).”

Senator Canavan said when families came to Canberra they were often not seen because politicians needed to stay at Parliament until late, and sometimes past midnight.
