THE city’sit ’ Wi Win­ter Rac­ing Car­ni­val gets un­der way to­day with the Townsville RSL 2YO Clas­sic ex­pected to draw a crowd of about 1800 ea­ger race­go­ers to Clu­den Park.

Townsville Turf Club chief ex­ec­u­tive Cas­san­dra Caz­zulino said the pro­gram would in­clude seven lo­cal races, pig rac­ing and chil­dren’s ac­tiv­i­ties.

“It’s tra­di­tion­ally the fam­ily event of the year,” she said.

It’s just the start of the win­ter rac­ing cal­en­dar, with high­lights in­clud­ing Ladies Race Day next Satur­day and the Townsville Cup on July 29.

Ms Caz­zulino said an­tic­i­pa­tion was al­ready build­ing for what promised to be a great Win­ter Rac­ing Car­ni­val.

“We’ve def­i­nitely had a re­ally strong re­sponse this year,” she said. “Our Ladies Day mar­quee has al­ready sold out.”

Miss World Aus­tralia Made­line Cowe is the Turf Club’s 2017 am­bas­sador and will be a spe­cial guest at both the Ladies Race Day and the Townsville Cup, dressed by lo­cal de­signer Peta Cripps.

Gates for the Townsville RSL 2YO Clas­sic open at 11am. En­try costs $ 15 or $ 10 for age con­ces­sions or RSL mem­bers.
