THE qual­ity of Townsville cui­sine has over­taken that of Cairns and now we have proof, a lo­cal restau­ra­teur says.

Renowned Palmer St es­tab­lish­ment JAM Restau­rant is now of­fi­cially the best con­tem­po­rary Aus­tralian restau­rant in Queens­land af­ter win­ning the soughtafter in­for­mal cat­e­gory. Owner Matt Mer­rin ( right) said it was great to see Townsville beat a field of restau­rants across Queens­land.

He said Townsville had over­taken Cairns in terms of the qual­ity of its food es­tab­lish­ments.

“We fo­cus on look­ing af­ter our lo­cals and aren’t chas­ing the tourist dol­lar,” he said.

“Cairns and Port Dou­glas have been known for food but now Townsville is ri­valling them and edg­ing above them. We have great oper­a­tors who are very pas­sion­ate about great food and good ser­vice.”
