Ugly calls to beauty
ORGANISERS of Miss World Australia have been inundated by discrimination complaints after a Muslim woman was crowned the new titleholder.
Since criminal profiler and proud Muslim Esma Voloder, 25, was crowned Miss World Australia last Friday, the organisation’s offices have been bombarded with hateful complaints, insisting she be replaced.
Miss World Australia national director Deborah Miller said she had fielded many calls that she described as “awful” and “mean”. “We have had lots of calls, people saying terrible things,” she said.
Voloder said she was saddened by the negativity, but she would not let the hateful comments affect her.
“In a way I forgive them ... I feel it comes from a lack of understanding. Life is too short to spread this negativity,” she said.
“There is a level of ignorance ... I think it is about fear and prejudgment. I am hoping to break down the barriers by just being me.”
