YOU can’t gett more true blue for a na­tional icon as the kan­ga­roo, and it’s one of a menagerie of an­i­mals fea­tured among the pages of Aus­tralia’s top chil­dren’s pic­ture books.

Queens­land com­pe­ti­tion win­ners Jor­dan Ma­son, 12, and her sis­ter Sky Ma­son, 7, ( pic­tured) got up close with a roo and a had first look at the Townsville Bul­letin’s Great Aus­tralian Sto­ry­book Col­lec­tion as spe­cial guests at yes­ter­day’s launch at Syd­ney’s Taronga Zoo.

The lucky win­ners were treated to an overnight Roar & Snore sleep­over at the zoo, up- close an­i­mal en­coun­ters, met pop­u­lar au­thor Mem Fox, and fea­tured in seg­ments on Nine’s To­day morn­ing show.

Five of Fox’s ti­tles – Pos­sum Magic, Time for Bed, This & That, The Magic Hat and Wil­fred Gor­don McDon­ald Par­tridge – along with other clas­sics Wom­bat Stew, The Very Cranky Bear and Pig the Pug, are in­cluded in the set of best- selling Aus­tralian pic­ture books.
