WHO out there can remember when Senator Ian Macdonald looked like this?

Senator Macdonald has shared the photograph of his much younger self, with wife Lesley, to celebrate becoming the longest serving member of the current Australian Parliament.

“Who would have thought when I first went to Canberra as an innocent boy from the bush way up in North Queensland 27 years ago, that I would end up being the longest serving pollie in the current Australian Parliament, or that I would have spent nine years as a Minister, travelled the world and met literally tens of thousands of fellow Australians from all walks of life — and hopefully in the process, achieved something?” he said.

“Along the way I met some wonderful characters like Bill Heffernan and Bronwyn Bishop, some real leaders like John Howard and Michael Woodridge ( who set up the JCU Medical School), some firm friends like Peter Lindsay and Warren Entsch, and some bad guys like my New South Wales Labor namesake, Ian Macdonald.”

Senator Macdonald described Parliament 27 years ago as a “much gentler and more genuine place”.

“Perhaps I have just gotten wiser with age, but nowadays there seems to be so many personal agendas running that have less to do with the good of the country and more to do with personal advancement,” he said.

“But while as the photo confirms, I have grown older with less hair, one thing has remained constant, and that is the support and encouragement of my wonderful, forever young wife, Lesley.”
