Rival clubs left to deal with curse of injuries
THE Cowboys and Broncos have contained damage of injuries to key players, but now they can see how their rivals go with several big names hurt at the weekend.
Melbourne will miss Cameron Smith for as little as one match with a pectoral injury, but Brisbane’s next opponents, Parramatta, yesterday lost Clint Gutherson with a season- ending knee injury.
The Cowboys won their past four matches played without the injured Johnathan Thurston and six of their past eight, without their champion halfback, who is out for the season.
The Broncos expect fullback and captain Darius Boyd ( broken thumb) back for their away clash against Parramatta on Friday night and playmaker Anthony Milford has weathered two matches for two wins since a shoulder injury threatened surgery for him.
Cronulla playmaker James Maloney will miss as many as three weeks after surgery yesterday to repair a broken bone in his hand.
The Roosters will again be without co- captain Jake Friend for their clash with North Queensland on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.
Gutherson will have surgery soon for a rupture to his anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.
