Disaster HQ to be built

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

A NEW local disaster management headquarters will be built as part of Townsville City Council’s 2017- 18 Budget focus on community safety.

The council has allocated $ 6.8 million for construction at its Dalrymple Rd depot, with works to begin by the end of next month.

The new facility will also house the North Queensland Regional Data Centre.

Local firm Jackson Semler has been awarded the tender to construct the facility, which will replace the existing centre at the Bamford Lane depot.

Mayor Jenny Hill said up to 100 jobs would be supported.

“I said back in March last year that the construction of the coordination centre would support local jobs and I am happy to say that is exactly what is happening,” Cr Hill said.

“This centre will be able to withstand the full force of a Category 5 cyclone and that will allow the Local Disaster Management Group to coordinate emergency responses.”
