USA curtail Stingers’ title bid

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT -

THE Australian women’s water polo team has lost their quarterfinal match to the United States at the world championships in Hungary.

Stingers veteran Keesja Gofers’ four goals weren’t enough to avoid the 7- 5 loss to the reigning world and Olympic champions in Budapest on Monday. The game remained goalless until four- and- a- half minutes in the second quarter before world No. 1 USA took control, taking a 3- 0 lead into halftime.

Gofers scored a third- quarter double but Australia could not shrink the three- goal advantage at the final break before the Americans held on to set up a semi- final clash with Russia. The world No. 4 Stingers will meet Italy in a fifth- place playoff semi- final on Wednesday.

Australia’s men face Serbia in the quarter- finals on Wednesday.
