Tests confirm banana bug

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

FURTHER testing has confirmed the presence of the devastating Panama disease on a North Queensland banana plantation.

Panama tropical race 4 was discovered on a Cavendish banana property earlier in July, near the property that was first infected in the Tully Valley in 2015. Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne said Biosecurity Queensland staff were monitoring on- farm activity and helping the property owners to contain the infection. “Biosecurity Queensland will ensure that the affected business can continue to operate as seamlessly as possible while we minimise the risk to the rest of the industry,” he said in a statement yesterday. “The owners had already established high standards of biosecurity on their farm and have shown a professional and proactive approach to management of the disease.”
