TEL should focus on TEARC

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

TEL CEO Patricia O’Callaghan is correct on the importance of the Mt Isa to Townsville rail line ( TB 26/ 07).

But surely the task on which they should be furiously focused is the completion of the Townsville Eastern Access Corridor ( TEARC).

This project, announced by Prime Minister Turnbull and Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester during the 2016 federal campaign, has been a Queensland Government pri- ority for over a decade. It is now over 12 months since the Labor State Government’s Deputy Premier Jackie Trad announced that a business case must be prepared.

This is the same Deputy Premier who took just 48 hours to get a fully costed business case completed for Brisbane’s Cross River Rail project.

The federal priority has always been the efficient movement of imports and exports through Townsville Port.

The TEARC must be completed first. TEL must surely know that. But there has been no mention of TEARC by TEL since the election last year. That is $ 147 million of federal funds waiting to be spent.

Townsville ratepayers are within their rights to ask just what TEL has done to bring the TEARC into being and providing for the economic growth of Townsville. EWEN JONES, Mundingburra.
