Fundrais­ers the wheel deal

STU­DENTS from Ig­natius Park Col­lege have used pedal power to raise more than $ 21,000 as part of the an­nual Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride.

This is the school’s fifth year of be­ing a part of the ride, with stu­dents wak­ing up at 4.30am three morn­ings a week and chal­leng­ing them­selves to a ride to en­sure they are ready.

Some of the riders are as young as 13 with the eldest be­ing Year 12 stu­dents.

Riders be­gan the trek with par­ents and teach­ers as sup­port crew yes­ter­day as part of the Galahs team and were last night rest­ing up at the Ing­ham Show­grounds be­fore be­gin­ning to­day’s gru­elling leg up the Card­well Range to make it to In­n­is­fail.

“We have been mak­ing re­ally good time,” teacher Paul Bruce said.

“We’ve had a lot of re­ally good peo­ple honk­ing and show­ing their sup­port as they go past.”

Year 12 stu­dent Joshua Keir raised more than $ 4600 for the Chil­dren’s Cancer In­sti­tute of Aus­tralia, which was the fifth high­est in­di­vid­ual total for the en­tire ride.

The group is ex­pected to ar­rive in Cairns about noon to­mor­row.
