Fundraisers the wheel deal
STUDENTS from Ignatius Park College have used pedal power to raise more than $ 21,000 as part of the annual Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride.
This is the school’s fifth year of being a part of the ride, with students waking up at 4.30am three mornings a week and challenging themselves to a ride to ensure they are ready.
Some of the riders are as young as 13 with the eldest being Year 12 students.
Riders began the trek with parents and teachers as support crew yesterday as part of the Galahs team and were last night resting up at the Ingham Showgrounds before beginning today’s gruelling leg up the Cardwell Range to make it to Innisfail.
“We have been making really good time,” teacher Paul Bruce said.
“We’ve had a lot of really good people honking and showing their support as they go past.”
Year 12 student Joshua Keir raised more than $ 4600 for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia, which was the fifth highest individual total for the entire ride.
The group is expected to arrive in Cairns about noon tomorrow.
