A GOLD Coast- based artist has taken out the top award for this year’s Strand Ephemera.

The North’s sculp­ture fes­ti­val was of­fi­cially launched at the Rock­pool last Fri­day night.

The win­ner of the highly con­tested $ 10,000 Award for Artis­tic Ex­cel­lence was re­vealed as Erica Gray for her work, Vis­ceral Bod­ies.

It is the se­cond time Ms Gray has won the award, af­ter co- cre­at­ing a Take a closer look at the sculp­tures fea­tured dur­ing Strand Ephemera win­ning piece in 2011. “I’m very ex­cited, the award is re­ally won­der­ful,” Ms Gray said.

“I al­ways strive to en­ter the event and I was re­ally thrilled to even be named a fi­nal­ist this year.”

Ms Gray de­scribes her work, which has been placed on and around a boul­der near the Strand Rock­pool as her in­ter­pre­ta­tion of the coral reef.

“It’s quite a bright, colour­ful and fun piece,” she said. “It in­cor­po­rates a lot of light­ing, soft sculp­tures and tex­tiles is a com­bi­na­tion of stitch and 3D print work.”

Lo­cal artist Har­riet GeaterJohn­son’s art­work Tran­sient Cab­i­net was named run­ner- up.

Strand Ephemera is free to at­tend and runs un­til Au­gust 6.
