Townsville Bulletin - - FRONT PAGE - LUCY SMITH lucy.smith@news.com.au

PATIENTS at a Kirwan medical centre were left shocked by an ugly confrontation between its director Dr Praveen Kumar and a staff doctor.

A Townsville woman, who asked not to be named, said she was at My Family Doctors last Friday when Dr Kumar, known as “Dr PK”, started swearing at the man over the treatment of a patient.

She said the confrontation continued outside the practice, where she later saw Dr Kumar ( right) with what looked to be blood on his hands and the other doctor bleeding from his eyebrow.

Dr Kumar’s registration was suspended last year after an investigation into allegations he slept with a patient and fathered a child with another. He is also due to face court this month after allegedly choking a woman in March.

PATIENTS at a Kirwan medical centre have been shocked by an ugly confrontation between its director and a doctor.

A Townsville woman, who did not wish to be named, said she was in the waiting area at My Family Doctors on Friday afternoon when the director, Dr Praveen Kumar, started swearing at a staff doctor.

“An elderly lady’s finger had been cut open … they were arguing and ( Dr Kumar) was swearing ‘ If I told you to do the stitch, you do the f-----stitch’,” she said.

The woman said the confrontation happened in front of her five- year- old daughter and another young girl, as well as several other adults in the waiting room. She said she heard the men arguing outside the medical centre afterwards.

“What I thought was sad was the way ( Dr Kumar) was speaking to staff. My child was scared, the other woman’s child was scared,” she said.

The woman said “after 10 minutes” she stepped outside to tell the two men to “quit it”.

The woman said she saw Dr Kumar with what looked to be blood on his hands. She said the other doctor was bleeding from his eyebrow.

The woman posted her story to Facebook with a video of the men standing outside the practice. Last night the video had been shared 412 times and viewed more than 36,000 times.

The woman said the confrontation had shaken her daughter. “I think it’s disgusting. We’re going to the doctors for help and we’ve had to witness that,” she said.

“( My daughter) shouldn’t have to see two adults arguing in front of her. I couldn’t even leave the surgery because they were in the doorway.”

It is understood the second doctor went to police following the incident but no official complaint was lodged.

Dr Kumar’s medical registration was suspended last year after a Health Ombudsman investigation found he was an “immediate risk” to patients.

The allegations relate to two women Dr Kumar hired as staff, treated as patients and engaged in sexual relationships with. The first complaint was filed in 2015 and another was filed in July last year.

Dr Kumar was granted bail in Townsville Magistrates Court in March, after he allegedly choked a woman and threatened her with a pool cue.

He is due back in court this month, charged with four counts of common assault, choking, breaching bail, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, taking reprisal, threatening violence and wilful damage.

Dr Kumar did not respond to numerous requests for comment from the Bulletin.
