PNG picks PM O’Neill

PAPUA New Guinea’s par­lia­ment has re- elected Pe­ter O’Neill as prime min­is­ter, end­ing a chaotic elec­tion cam­paign marred by vi­o­lence.

While Mr O’Neill’s rul­ing Peo­ple’s Na­tional Congress party was un­able to win enough seats to form a gov­ern­ment out­right in elec­tions last month, in which count­ing con­tin­ues, he se­cured enough mi­nor party and in­de­pen­dent sup­port to be re- elected prime min­is­ter yes­ter­day.

He has held the job since 2011.

Mr O’Neill was de­clared the win­ner af­ter se­cur­ing 60 votes.
