Conflict of interest on Maggie bridge

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

IN a recent article, William Condon discussed the building of a bridge to Magnetic Island.

I find Bridget Wood’s reply a conflict of interest as two directors of TEC have interests in the port and the ferry.

I believe that the ferry would still have work as far as international tourists go and that the bridge would enhance the island’s attraction, where visitors find it hard to be able to take their own vehicles over.

The costs of houses on the island have dropped. Accessibility via the bridge would allow Townsville residents to work in the CBD but live on the island, eliminating the cost of the ferry.

The information centres need to be upgraded to capture the travelling tourists who would stay longer in Townsville and help the economy.

I think that this debate warrants attention by the Townsville Council to seriously look at this alternative. Congratulations to William Condon for having the foresight to raise the issue and let’s hope that an honest debate will prevail. JOHN WRIGHT,

Black River.
