Wright, Fitzgibbons standing above the pack

Townsville Bulletin - - SPORT -

AUSTRALIAN Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons have held onto top spots in the world women’s surfing title race but American challenger Courtney Conlogue has moved up into third place after making the semi- final at the US Open.

Conlogue, a pre- season favourite for the world title the last two years, was knocked out of the Huntington Beach event by eventual winner and fellow American Sage Erickson.

Had she won the event, Conlogue would have taken the lead in the race for the 2017 women’s world crown of surfing. But her third place at the tournament saw her knock Australian Stephanie Gilmore out of third place in the rankings with four events left. The race for the 2017 world title is one of the closest seen in recent years. Conlogue is the only woman to have won two events with Wright, Gilmore, Fitzgibbons and Erickson all winning one each.

Pro surfer Sally Fitzgibbons.
