Man charged over death of his mate
A “TRIP of a lifetime” between two childhood mates has ended in tragedy on a Far North beach with one dead and the other accused of causing it.
The pair and their partners were so tight- knit they were living together in Brisbane and journeyed to Cape York during July last year.
It was while they were camped at remote Chilli Beach, north of Lockhart River, that the two men were drinking and allegedly got into an argument that turned into a physical fight.
Detective Inspector Geoff Marsh did not detail the nature of the alleged fight, but said 46year- old Brisbane man Robbie Irvine was pronounced dead at the scene.
He said it had taken more than a year for detectives to charge his 48- year- old friend with manslaughter, partly due to police awaiting the outcome of pathology results.
The man is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on September 4. Det Insp Marsh said the fight between the pair had been witnessed by others at the campground.
