Oh baby, it’s a shining light
THE Townsville Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit ( NICU) has been able to purchase a cutting edge piece of equipment thanks to a generous community donation.
Director of Neonatology Professor Guan Koh said the unit’s new $ 2000 Astodia Diaphanoscope, or transilluminator, was the “Ferrari” of its kind. The transilluminator is used to show blood vessels on premature babies.
“This is the best one we have had. We had one that was very cumbersome – this is good because it’s very portable,” Professor Koh said.
The Townsville NICU treats 850 babies a year, from everywhere north of Rockhampton. Professor Koh said with about 200 premature babies admitted a year, the equipment would be used daily.
He thanked the Townsville Central Rotary Club for the donation.
“I’m very heartened by this gesture. It’s a beautiful situation where the community is helping us to help the community, especially the most vulnerable members of our community,” he said.
The Townsville NICU was voted the best in Australia this year by the L’il Aussie Prems Foundation.
