Martin Place tents to go
NSW police will be given tough new powers allowing them to tear down Sydney’s tent city in Martin Place. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said urgent legislation was introduced into the parliament yesterday and was expected to pass by tomorrow. The move comes after a plan agreed to by Sydney City Council and the tent dwellers to vacate the campsite fell through. “This is a course of action I wish I didn’t have to take,” Ms Berejiklian said. The changes give NSW Police the power to remove people from Crown land if the Lands Minister deems there is a “public safety issue”.
