England victory rings hollow
ENGLAND may have jumped over Australia in the Test rankings after cruising to a series victory over South Africa but even coach Trevor Bayliss knows they are a long way off Ashes ready.
In a series dominated by bowlers, English all- rounder Moen Ali spun the home team to a 3- 1 series win at Lords with five second innings wickets and 25 for the series in which the Proteas passed 350 just once, and England made the only score over 400. England are now third in the rankings and Australia fourth but the English top- order, apart from new captain Joe Root, showed little to instil any faith that they could survive an all- out Aussie assault this summer.
Bayliss couldn’t avoid declaring changes needed to be made despite his team’s triumph and opener Keaton Jennings, who averaged just 15.87 against South Africa, isn’t likely to survive.
