Glencore lease attacked

Townsville Bulletin - - NEWS -

A STATE Labor MP says he belongs to a “good government” that “shows no concern” for Queensland workers and their families.

Mirani MP Jim Pearce made the comments when backing Labor’s candidate for Burdekin Mike Brunker, who decried this week’s granting of a mining lease to Swiss commodities giant Glencore over the massive Wandoan coal project. Mr Brunker said the lease should never have happened.

Mr Pearce agreed, blogging that the Government should act to end the “bullying and harassment” of workers and community by Glencore at the Oakey North underground mine near Tieri in central Queensland, where workers had been locked out.

Glencore said it was aware of Mr Pearce’s “misinformed comments’’.
