Running festival off the track

Townsville Bulletin - - OPINION -

ON Saturday August 19 Townsville Running Festival will close the Pallarenda road between 5am and 1pm.

In 2016 I suggested that an alternate route around the Ross River Linear Park would be possible and would not require any road closures. This has been ignored. Townsville Running Festival organisers have a “duty of care” to Pallarenda residents as in the event of a medical emergency e. g. heart attack, stroke, snake bite or fishing accident.

It will take emergency service vehicles in excess of 30 minutes to do the round trip between Bundock St and Pallarenda instead of the normal time of less than 10 minutes.

Also, during the road closure period the approximately 800 residents of Pallarenda, who have no interest in running, will not be able to go about their normal work, social and recreational activities ( including catching flights from Townsville Airport) without extensive delays, as the road closure means that the five- minute trip between Pallarenda and Bundock St will take approximately 30 minutes and only two round trips per hour between Bundock St and Pallarenda will be possible. FRANK OSBORN,

Pallarenda.
