Fast eater’s feat popular
VIDEO of a Townsville man devouring a 3.5kg chicken parmigiana meal in about six minutes has been viewed nearly one million times after going viral online.
Joe Hodges took on the challenge at the Shamrock Hotel in Townsville to assist owner Regan Anderson in setting the benchmark for an upcoming eating competition.
The hotel will offer $ 500 to anyone who can beat Mr Hodges’ time and the meal for free to customers that eat it within 20 minutes.
Footage showing Mr Hodges methodically chewing through the massive meal went viral online and has since made national news.
Now the Goonyella Riverside Mine worker has revealed his secret to eating so fast.
“Chewing is optional, just bite and swallow,” he said.
“I’ve always been a big eater.
“My dad always said he would rather pay me a wage than pay to feed me.”
His favourite type of food is sweets and Mr Hodges says he can’t go past doughnuts.
“I’ve eaten 144 doughnuts in 24 hours on a trip in America,” he said.
Despite his eating habits he’s not considered unfit or obese.
“I’m a fit person who trains hard five to six times a week,” he said.
“I’m really surprised by the reaction of everyone but what’s funny is all my friends think this is normal.”
And he hasn’t ruled out turning it into a job.
“I’ve never really thought of becoming a pro even though a lot of people said I should,” he said.
“But I’m considering going to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and trying a few challenges down there to see how it goes.
“Maybe I’ll even train for it.”
A video of his feat had more than 1.5 million impressions on Facebook and drew tens of thousands of comments across the nation.
The Shamrock Hotel will offer the challenge to its customers next Wednesday.
