North Ward success ensures finals spot
NORTH Ward have cemented their place in the Townsville and Districts Rugby Union finals with a 29- 19 win over last year’s grand finalists Burdekin at Mike Carney Toyota Park.
The two sides have a history of entertaining clashes this season and they produced the goods again on Friday night as North Ward squared the ledger at two wins apiece.
Young guns Lachlan Cavallin and Bernard Chong were both impressive for North Ward and coach Chris Caleo was pleased to see his side take control with a finals spot on the line.
“It was pretty important for us to get that win to secure that last spot in the finals,” Caleo said.
“The Burdekin boys always play a good, tough game of footy and there were a few bro- ken people by the end of it, but we enjoy playing them. All four games ( this season) have been pretty tight affairs. That’s a pretty good indicator we’re pretty close in terms of type of football we play.”
North Ward and Burdekin will face off again during the finals and Caleo expected another expansive contest, but he was confident the Old Boys would be up for the challenge.
“We’ve still a few rough spots to work on but as long as we can get over a few injuries should be able to field a pretty competitive side,” he said.
Meanwhile, Brothers remain an outside chance of snatching the minor premiership from Teachers West following their 87- 5 thrashing of Ross River on Saturday.
Winger Jacob Martinez scored five tries and booted 11 goals while Eric Rademacher scored a double.
