Help lift festive spirits for Defence
TOWNSVILLE residents are being asked to support an annual Christmas appeal to send care packages to deployed Australian Defence Force personnel.
Herbert MP Cathy O’Toole is running the annual appeal for the third time and hopes to top last year’s record of 120 care packages sent to the various locations where Defence personnel are serving.
“This appeal is about asking people from the community to donate some Christmas treats for our men and women who are serving overseas,” she said.
“It’s really important we show the appreciation from our community to those men and women who give so selflessly so that we can live in the beautiful freedoms that we do.”
Ms O’Toole said collection zones would be set up at Townsville RSL, Kirwan Woolworths Parkside Plaza, City Lane Woolworths, IGA Domain Central, Thuringowa RSL, Annandale Central Shopping Centre, Stockland Townsville customer desk, Rasmussen Woolworths and at her electorate office.
“People when you’re out shopping if you can buy a few little extra Christmas treats – things that are non- perishable – and put them in the collection box that would be great.”
Commander of 3rd Brigade, Scott Winter said the packages were a welcome surprise for personnel who were away from their families during Christmas.
“Having been the beneficiary of a package from a nameless Australian while overseas, there is nothing more touching at that time of year than to know you’ve got the backing of the local community,” he said.
“So for those soldiers, men and women who are serving overseas next year, they certainly don’t expect it but you’ll absolutely be making someone’s Christmas.”
