New health base at Thurs­day Is­land

THE Aus­tralian In­sti­tute of Trop­i­cal Health and Medicine launched a new base on Thurs­day Is­land on Thurs­day.

Min­is­ter for Train­ing and Skills Devel­op­ment Shan­non Fen­ti­man of­fi­cially opened the fa­cil­ity, which is de­signed to sup­port re­search, train­ing and com­mu­nity en­gage­ment.

“Queens­land con­tin­ues to play a sig­nif­i­cant role in the re­search and preven­tion of trop­i­cal dis­ease,” she said.

James Cook Univer­sity con­trib­uted to fund­ing the new base.

JCU Vice Chan­cel­lor San­dra Hard­ing said it would sup­port im­por­tant work in trop­i­cal health and medicine.

“As a study base it will sup­port our stu­dents here on Thurs­day Is­land and across the Torres Strait, both those who are study­ing lo­cally, and those who visit to com­plete place­ments in nurs­ing, medicine, den­tistry, phar­macy and phys­io­ther­apy,” she said.
