You can fly direct to Kyoto from Australia, landing at nearby Osaka Kansai International airport, or catch the train to the city, with many lines connecting Kyoto to other cities including Tokyo. Consider a Japan Rail Pass if you plan to do a lot of train travel around Japan. Bicycle is your ideal form of transpor t, with those easy to ride streets.
