Small screen fave Catherine Bell’s back making magic on Good Witch
star Catherine Bell’s casting a Good Witch spell
She’s back onscreen in Netflix’s Good Witch... but we’re showing our age by saying we just loved catherine Bell in JAG! She played Major Sarah MacKenzie opposite David James Elliott on the navy lawyer drama – and it’s hard to believe it’s more than a decade since that show ended.
Good Witch, renewed for a fifth season, stars catherine as a single mother with a gift for white witchery in smalltown Middleton, US. Her co-stars include former Desperate Housewives and JAG actor James Denton and young Bailee Madison.
offscreen, catherine’s mum to Gemma, 15, and Ronan, eight. the slim brunette – she’s 50 and beautiful – seems to have turned back time when we meet for her cosy chat with oct 15-29, 2018 TV SOAP about how telly’s evolved, her hit show and her fashion sense...
How has TV changed since the days of
JAG? Well, the industry has changed so much! those were the days of three networks on primetime and there were 22 to 24 episodes [of a show] a year, so that’s changed a lot because now we’ve got DVRs, we’ve got people fast-forwarding through commercials, networks trying to figure out how to make money, and then Netflix and Amazon... So it’s very different now, maybe more competitive? there’s also more opportunity for successful shows – and good shows.
More opportunity for actors, too?
Absolutely, for women’s roles; although JAG was like that – but that was a bit unusual back then...
What can fans expect to see more of on eps of
Good Witch? Well, there’ll be a delay in the wedding (of catherine’s cassie Nightingale to James’s dreamy doc Sam Ford), I can let you know that!
You have such a fashion sense. Tell us, who influenced you growing up?
wonderful My mum [Iranian Mina Ezzatti] had amazing style! She’d often find something that was a little ahead of the curve; she’d find something that was going to be in fashion for someone my age – something that my friends didn’t have. one time she found a pair of metallic, skin-tight jeans, like leggings, and I tell you, they were amazing! I wore them to school and they did not go over so well... but about three months later, everyone was wearing those leggings.
Do you have any beauty tips to share?
If you feel pretty or feel good, that’s half the battle and the rest of it is that you’ve got to do what feels right to you.
What about favourite designers?
I like French designer Zadig et Voltaire. In my personal life, I go simple; simple t-shirt and jeans and cute flats, just because I have kids and I’m running around and chasing them, so that’s easier. Ulla Johnson tops. She has pretty tops that you can throw on with jeans and flip flops which are a little bit prettier, a little bit of flair. TVS
