SUSAN’S STUNNING AT 71!
Soap fave Susan Lucci – stunning at 71! – is back with a whole new lease of life after All My Children
Soap favourite Susan Lucci tells us life’s never been better
Raven-haired Erika cane embodied what many female All My
Children fans aspired to: the idea of having it all; brains, beauty, lots of admirers and eventually a family.
of course, there were two sides to this. those fans didn’t necessarily want to scheme to get there and leave lots of broken hearts and marriages in the stormy aftermath! Nevertheless, Erika was the vixen with a heart they loved to hate for many years on the hit soap. Maybe that’s why she was nominated for the Daytime Emmy 19 times during her 41 years on the show (she finally won one in 1999; AMC was cancelled in 2011).
Either way, gorgeous Susan recalls those years – and the fame and fortune the show brought her – fondly. Now 71, she’s on to new adventures, having agreed a Hallmark deal that promises lots of airtime.
TV SOAP asks Susan about her new show, her adventures post-soap – and about her evergreen beauty and vitality.
You’re looking gorgeous as ever! Do you have any life-long beauty secrets to share?
You’re sweet to ask! I do everything that everybody tells us to do. I’m very disciplined about taking care of my skin and I just think if you just do everything one day at a time, and those days add up… I think the thing I started to do before people knew of it was to have water and lemon. During the first summer of college I worked in a hotel and I noticed at breakfast and at the table were men and women in their eighties and every one of them ordered hot water and lemon. And I thought, There must be something good about this! Look at them! They’re travelling on their own, they have all their marbles and they’re great! So I thought, Put that in the back of your mind, you 18-year-old, so I did! then when I was rehearsing all the time on AMC, I cut down on coffee because heaven knows I didn’t need any more nervousness! So I started
then and I still do; two cups of coffee in the morning and the rest of the day it’s hot water and lemon. I found out that it balances your metabolism, and your pH, it boosts your immune system and it’s really good for your skin. Tell us what youre doing with Hallmark... I’m doing a series of movies and the rst one will be based on a book called Charley’s Web. Are you now living on the West Coast part-time? No, we [hubby Helmut Huber] live in New York. We lived in LA for the last two AMC seasons. It’d be easier to go to Canada from there... It could be, unless we’re going to shoot in Vancouver, then it would be easier from LA but, whatever, I travel a lot! I’m used to being on planes. I’ll be OK. You’ll always be Erika to some of your fans. What can you say to them about your new endeavours? I’m happy that to many of my fans Erika is perhaps my legacy. I’m so thrilled that I had the opportunity to play her and she was so well-received by the audience; still, to this day. My audience has followed me to, probably, unexpected places – like Devious Maids and Hot in Cleveland. They’ve been there with me and even followed me to [cable shopping network] QVC where I had my Pilates chair and activewear. Speaking of which, you looked so good in those bathing suit shots! Aw, thank you, the paparazzi [last] winter in Barbados? I had no idea! One day I saw way, way down the beach, a man and a woman but way down there. I thought it was probably people from the hotel where we were staying, out to shoot property as it was so beautiful. A few days later, my friend texted me and said, “Do you know you’re all over the tabloids?” After I saw the shots, I looked for the paparazzi! Oh my goodness!
