■ THE rise and rise of Coolangatta as a destination of choice for short breaks by domestic tourists has seen it earn a top five ranking with a leading Australia online travel site.
In a survey conducted by Wotif.com for a report titled Travel Yourself Better, it found that most Australians felt more recharged by taking numerous “mini breaks” over the year rather than waiting for one long, lengthy holiday. Wotif asked for the top 10 destinations under $200 per night for a short break stay with Coolangatta coming in at number five.
The leading destination was Cairns, followed by Launceston, Apollo Bay, Coffs Harbour and then Coolangatta. Wotif’s Director of brand marketing and communication, Amanda Behre said several factors worked in Coolangatta’s favour when it came to appealing to tourists looking to “recharge the batteries”, including its proximity to the Gold Coast Airport and convenience of beaches, shops, restaurants and entertainment.
