Barrowman proud of roles
Star headed to Brisbane as Supanova Comic Con guest
COMIC conventions are a haven for fans hoping to meet their heroes, but few have as diverse a fan base as the multi-talented John Barrowman.
Best known for his roles on Doctor Who and
Torchwood as the time-travelling Captain Jack Harkness, and on Arrow as Malcolm Merlyn, he’s had the pleasure of being part of two huge franchises.
“I’m really proud to say I’ve been involved in two of the most iconic universes in the history of fandom,” Barrowman said.
The star is in Australia for Supanova Comic Con: a celebration of all things comic book, superhero, sci-fi and pop culture.
He will be joined by stars such as Harry Potter’s
Bonnie Wright, Ian Somerhalder from Vampire
Diaries, and Wednesday Addams herself – Christina Ricci.
Barrowman was surprised when a fan once told him that few big stars made the long trip to Australia.
“I thought that’s pretty sh-tty, so any time I’m given the opportunity I take it,” he said.
Barrowman will be making an appearance at the Con with his sister and author Carole, with whom he wrote the Hollow Earth series as well as Torchwood and Arrow comics.
He is also bringing his husband Scott and assistant Kelsey, so they plan to make a trip of it.
“We haven’t been up as far as Brisbane, so when we’re in Brisbane, we’ll be hiring car and going out and about,” he said.
An entertainer in every sense of the word, Barrowman said conventions could be where his worlds as West End and Broadway performer and sci-fi icon collided.
The friendships developed from what he calls the cross-pollination of his fans is one of the things he’s most proud of.
“We’ve had relationships and great friendships develop from people who watch the show and meet at the convention,” he said.
For any fans wanting to meet Barrowman, there’s only one time that’s off-limits.
“No matter where we are – airport, streets, waiting at a bar – come over ask for a selfie and we’ll take it,” he said.
“The only time I’ll ask people to wait is if I’m eating my dinner.”
