ON YOUR BIKE WITH A&K
The first project of Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) Australia, working with the West Australian chapter of Bicycles for Humanity, has seen 433 bikes shipped to the Bwindi Women Bicycle Enterprise in Uganda. The bike shop employs five local women who are empowered with extensive training in bike repair and business management. The program’s positive effects extend beyond the supplementation of income and resonate throughout the entire community, providing community members with much-needed mobility. A portion of the bike shops profits are also invested back into the community to enhance local healthcare and support the school fees of orphaned students. Even the shipping containers themselves are put to use as part of the structure of the village bike shop. As one of the 35 AKP projects under way worldwide, the Bwindi bike shop supports A&K’s belief that travel comes with the responsibility of leaving the world a better place than we have found it. A&K guests are afforded the opportunity to observe the effects of the program in action with a guided bike tour and a meeting with the women themselves.
