Sydney’s Darling Harbour will be graced with some French flair when the Sofitel Darling Harbour — the first new-build, five-star hotel to launch in the city since the Olympic Games — opens its doors this month. Architect Richard Francis-Jones has deftly combined the twin influences of the harbour’s maritime history and the style and character of the French city of Marseille to bring a relaxed sophistication to the 590-room hotel.

Inside, these themes are echoed through the grandest statements — soaring curved wooden ceilings in the Club Millesime lounge and a huge aquarium behind the lobby — to the tiniest of details, such as driftwood room-number plaques and the menu on offer in the Atelier by Sofitel restaurant. The hotel’s location means it can offer guests incredible views over the city and the harbour — take them in from the 35th-floor club lounge or the fourth-floor infinity pool area.
