When Peter Petzold and his wife Lydia Dalle Nogare took the leap into the Australian watch market from their native Germany, they captured a clientele looking for something different. Deciding to forgo the big players of Switzerland and Japan, the couple became champions for the independent watchmakers of Germany and beyond, and brought them into a market that was searching for quality timepieces that offered something more than the usual brand names. Define Watches have since grown to become one of Australia’s biggest independent watch importers.

“I get to work with highly skilled and creative people who manufacture, what are to me, miniature works of art,” says Petzold. “It is a pleasure and honour to be able to bring something wonderful and different to the mainstream, as we all share the same passion.”

But while they call the sunny shores of Noosa home, Frankfurt is where the inspiration comes from. “Frankfurt is a central gateway to our watch suppliers throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In fact, one of our most well-loved brands, Sinn, is based in Frankfurt. But I am also from this area so for me it is a bit of a homecoming as well.”

Cultural Tip “Germans are straightforward and professional, and we appreciate detail. Do your homework and have something meaningful to bring to the table. Respect is big in Germany, so referring to business colleagues by their surname is commonplace — even after years of working together.”
