Vision Magazine - - Destinations -

The nine-story facade built in the middle of the cliff side, with its top level with the tip of the cliff face, is the most iconic and tallest structure of Mogao Caves. Standing at approximately 33 meters high, the magnificent reddishbrown wooden outer structure was built to house a colossal statue of Buddha Maitreya (the Buddhist Messiah) made of clay stucco over a sandstone frame which measures 35.6 metres high, making it China’s third largest seated Buddha statue.
