A“Pearls are always appropriate. -- Jacqueline Kennedy

s a string of pearls exudes a simple elegance it is hard to imagine that assembling a perfect strand of lustrous beads involves such an arduous and costly process. Yet a perfect strand of pearls may take years to assemble, requiring a process of sorting through thousands of pearls to locate the ones with the perfect shape, colour and texture.

Since the depletion of seabeds about a century ago, natural pearls have become extremely rare; they are a chance product of the whims of nature. In the 1920s Mr Mikimoto Kokichi invented a method of culturing pearls with the vision that pearls ‘be affordable for every woman’. This vision materialised in the 1960s. The artistry of pearl culturing begins with pearl divers who collect wild oysters from the pristine waters off the Northern Territory. The oysters are seeded in a delicate procedure to surgically implant a nucleus. The oyster will then proceed to secrete nacre, an inner shell substance for up to two to three years, accumulating layers to produce a lustrous gem and consequently birthing a wondrous new pearl.

There are several types of pearls, the Australian South Sea Pearl, Black Tahitian Pearl, Akoya Pearl and Pure Pearls being the main types.

The Australian South Sea Pearl is the "Queen" of pearls and is cultivated from the Pinctada maxima mollusc, the largest and most highly prized pearl oysters that can grow up to 20mm in diameter. These pure transparent pearls known as “orient” combine with pastel hues including silver, rose, white rose gold and white gold to produce quality gems of unsurpassed beauty. Another much sought-after pearl is the rare champagne gold pearl produced from gold-lipped oyster shells.

The exotic Black Tahitian Pearls, or the Black-lip pearl oyster found in the South Pacific range in size from 8-18mm in diameter and come in a remarkable spectrum of colours from creamy white, green, aubergine and black. The darker the pearl, the higher its commercial value.

Akoya pearls are cultured from Akoya oysters which grow in the salt waters of China, Korea and Japan. The Akoya oyster is the smallest pearlproducing oyster in the world and Akoya pearls are often available in sizes of 3 – 10mm, the most popular size being 6-8mm. These pearls are prized for their lustrous rich hues of white, cream, yellow and silvery blue.

The cheapest of the pearls are pure pearls, found in fresh water lakes around the world. They are culitivated in fresh water mussels, that produce numerous pearls per shell. These pearls come in a wide spectrum of colours from white, champagne, cream, orange, pink, purple, lilac, mauve, dark blue and brown.

Australian Pearl Divers entered the prestigious pearl industry as jewellery wholesalers in 1967. In the early 1990s, a pearl workshop was opened to the public providing pearls directly from the farm. Its reputation quickly spread through word of mouth and is now one of Australia’s leading international pearl suppliers. Australian Pearl Divers has become the go-to place for enchanting ready-made pieces or dazzling commissioned ensembles fit for royalty – literally. Australian Pearl Divers have been commissioned to design and manufacture pieces for dignitaries including the Duke of Cambridge, the Duchess of Cambridge, the King of Morocco as well as Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary. An elegant handmade pendant with Australian South Sea Pearl dressed in 18k white gold and embellished with golden sapphire, commissioned by the Australian Monarchist League in celebration of the most recent Royal Wedding is a fine example of the illustrious workmanship of the craftsmen at Australian Pearl Divers.
