Ocho, from Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, and Full Moon from Cheng Tsung–lung, Artistic Director of Taiwan’s Cloud Gate 2. These two works not only reflect the different cultural philosophies of east and west, but interact in perfect synergy.

Sydney Dance Company founded in 1969 is Australia's leading cotemporary dance company, presenting new work in Australia and internationally. “By collaborating with international choreographers, we love to connect our local audiences with various art forms from around the world,” says Anne Dunn, Executive Director of Sydney Dance Company.

“In terms of body movement, costumes and set design, contemporary dance is very different to conventional dance. It is characterised by its versatility and it can be danced to almost any style of music, or combined with other dance forms to create new styles of movement. This means contemporary dancers require solid dance skills, great physical strength and flexibility, malleable body movement and rich imaginations. our sixteen dancers all come from a ballet background, and even now, ballet is still one of the compulsory courses of

their training as well as other athletic sessions," says Anne.

Spanish choreographer Rafael Bonachela began his early dance training in Barcelona before moving to London, and in 1992 joined the legendary Rambert Dance Company. He remained with Rambert as a dancer and Associate Choreographer until 2006 at which time he successfully set up the Bonachela Dance Company (BDC) thus setting the course for the meteoric rise of his choreographic career. In 2009, after a brief six months as a guest choreographer at the Sydney Dance Company, Bonachela was appointed its Artistic Director.

Cheng Tsung–lung, the choreographer of Full Moon, is an internationally recognised Taiwanese contemporary dance choreographer and has held the position of Artistic Director of Taiwan’s Cloud Gate 2 since 2014. Working with Sydney Dance Company for the first time, Cheng showed great appreciation for the professionalism, creativity and skill of the dancers. He was particularly inspired by the fact that they all danced with great team spirit, which, for him truly fulfilled the meaning of

Full Moon – complete and harmonious.

What contemporary dance brings to us are emotions. It amplifies feelings in our hearts and brings different people together. It shows beauty, creativity and rhythms without being trapped by the barriers of language. --- Cheng Tsung-lung

Anne Dunn
