With their spectacular flair and colouring, opals have long been considered one of the luckiest and most magical gemstones throughout history. While opals symbolised love and hope to the Romans, the ancient Greeks believed in their prophetic power and ability to protect people from disease. With 95% of opals coming from Australia, they are known as the “The Lucky Gem from the Lucky Country.”

There are 14 characteristics that define the quality of opals, several of which depend on the merit of processing. Careful cutting and polishing produces a fine finish and minimises waste in the gemstone, highlighting the radiance of the October birthstone.

The highest quality opals display brilliant flashes of colour when turned which is known as play-of-colour. The range of colour is created by light refracting from millions of microscopic silica spheres contained within the opal structure, creating a rainbow effect. Precious opals can exhibit all the colours contained within the light spectrum, yet most have a base colour ranging from white to light grey to black.

Some opali carry such a play within them that they equal the deepest and richest colours of painters. Others simulate the flaming fire of burning sulphur and even the bright blaze of burning oil. --- Phiny the Elder, a Roman scholar in 75AD

Some Australian Aborigines believe opals were created when their creator descended to Earth via a rainbow that connected land and sky. They believe that opals contain mystical powers, bringing harmony and hope.

Once upon a time, this stone was the engagement ring of choice, being 1350 times rarer than diamonds. Unlike any other gem, the opal’s kaleidoscopic colours, pattern and fires reminds one of fireworks, jellyfish and galaxies.

Australian Opal Cutters is an internationally recognized business that was established in 1982. They bring a wide range of stunning opal products to the world, including Australian Black Opals, Australian Boulder Opals, White Opals, Crystal Opals, doublets and Triplets, and many exquisite hand-crafted jewellery products.

Australian Pearl Divers and Opal Cutters
