The man who enters the San Francisco Opera’s interview room is slender, of average height, and moves with natural agility. He settles into a leather chair, adds a layer of clothing to ward off the ever-blowing A/C on this summer day, calm and at ease. Darkly handsome, he displays no vanity but radiates charm. When he speaks, a soothing timbre hints at the richness of his singing voice. He talks openly and listens patiently. His easy laughter reveals a selfdeprecating sense of humour. He is Ildebrando, without primo uomo airs.
