editor’s LETTER
Ihave always admired Naomi Watts, long before she was an Academy Award-nominated actress. She attended a high school down the road from mine in Sydney, and was just a few years ahead of me. I’m sure she doesn’t remember me from back then, but she was always the girl you noticed, always beautiful.
After school I became friends with her brother and admired her from afar: she was easily the coolest girl in the nightclub. When she worked as a fashion editor at Follow Me magazine, I wanted her job and her look. Today, I’m most impressed by her attitude to life (okay, and maybe also the amazing couture she wears in this issue and her perfection on every red carpet).
Separation and divorce are hard – as I know from personal experience – but the manner in which Naomi has embraced new beginnings and pushed forward is inspiring for anyone facing tough decisions or an uncertain future.
Her acting talent is rightly celebrated, but her determination and drive should be, too.
I also love the honesty with which she discusses in our cover story her first big break, when she was hired by director David Lynch, with whom she has recently worked again. She so beautifully explains to Sophie Tedmanson the fragility of that moment. Naomi’s humility has transcended all the Hollywood hype and the many years of A-lister red-carpet events, as has her natural beauty and impeccable taste in fashion. It may be a lesser-known fact that Naomi also has impeccable taste in interior design. Follow her favourite architects on Instagram, Ashe and Leandro (@ashe_leandro), and you’ll see what I mean.
With Naomi as a willing subject, fashion director Christine Centenera and Australian photographer Emma Summerton have made magic again and created one of my favourite covers to date.
As we head into winter, fashion editor Kate Darvill edits the best coats (from page 138), and junior fashion editor Petta Chua shows us new ways to wear denim (see page 55). Finally, we introduce you to Claire Stokes, who I first met through one of her bridesmaids, Sally Pitt, who works for Armani. I knew any friend of Sally’s would be great company, smart and a lot of fun. I was right – see page 154. We thank Claire and Ryan for sharing some of their intimate wedding photos with Vogue readers.
