On the eve of the annual Spring Racing Carnival, we salute an Australian champion and Vogue’s first equine cover star.
It was September 2012 when champion racehorse Black Caviar caught our eye, winning at Royal Ascot with an Australasian record-breaking 22-race unbeaten streak. Three months later, Black Caviar (known as Nelly in the stables and at home) added another plaudit to her mane: as the first horse to grace the cover of Vogue Australia. The image of the equine champion, standing with ethereal Australian model Julia Nobis, featured in the December 2012 collector’s edition of Vogue.
