VOGUE Living Australia - - In Vogue Edit -

Melbourne-based sculptor Steven John Clark combines skills in stonemasonry and textiles to create furniture and objet under the name of Den Holm.

“I left school in Scotland at 16 to become a stonemason. After doing my apprenticeship I did a degree in embroidery in Manchester, then moved to Melbourne to play soccer. A friend asked me to make a plinth for her

and everyone was excited about it. It seemed like something I could do because I found it really easy. I love how I’ve fallen into sculpture. I’ve already got the technical ability but my years of studying fashion gives me a different approach in the way I use the chisels. It’s complete freedom working with stone. There are no rules.”
