Air spotters in Wangaratta, 1942

Wangaratta Chronicle - North East Regional Extra - - News -

ON June 21, 1942, Wangaratta became the control centre for the North East area of the VAOC, an organisation of volunteers who watched the skies over Australia for both friendly and enemy aircraft.

The control centre was set up on the top floor of the Commonwealth Bank, at the corner of Murphy and Reid Streets.

The organisation provided a valuable service, and saved a number of civilian aircraft, which were in danger from engine malfunction at night, by directing them to safe landing fields which were equipped with landing flares.
