From sled dogs to snow sports
MOUNTAIN goers are spoiled for choice this week at local snow resorts.
At Falls Creek, Friday, August 4 will see The Board Lounge Throwdown (BLT), the second of two BLT rail jams, which will be held under lights in Slalom Plaza.
August 4-5 also sees the running of one of Falls Creek’s biggest annual events, the Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic.
The event boasts dozens of sled dog teams battling it out for racing supremacy, and more information on this exciting event can be found at www. fallssleddog.org.au.
Tuesday, August 8 is the date for the running of the Australian Secondary School Team Championships (ASSSTC), which showcases some of this country’s best teen snow talent.
The Snow Trek and Travel Mini Series takes place on Sunday, August 6, while Monday, August 7 kicks off a week of festivities to mark the 70th anniversary of Falls Creek itself.
The week of celebrations including walking from Howman’s Gap to Falls Creek in period costume, an 80’s disco, and many other activities themed around the decades that Falls Creek has been open.
To honour the celebration the Falls Creek Arts and Heritage Trail has been added to the Falls Creek User Guide.

Meanwhile, at Mt Hotham, the Hotham Junior Free Ride Series will take place on August 4-5, as will the Hotham Banked Slalom open event.
Funds and awareness will be raised on Saturday, August 5 with the Mum’s The Word Daffodil Day Rail Jam.
This is the seventh annual rail jam, where visitors can slide some rails as well as raise funds and provide support for people and families living with cancer.
All donation proceeds for the event and after party will go towards the Victorian Cancer Council.
Meanwhile, the FIS National Alpine Championships will take place on Mt Hotham from August 7-11.
Over at Mt Buller, you can enjoy the Junior National Mogul Championships on August 5, and the Subaru Victorian Interschools Cross Country Championship on August 6.
Snow is occurring at Mt Buffalo, although snow cover can vary depending on the weather.
Facilities on the mountain include a café and day shelter at Dingo Dell.
