Beechworth earth tremor, 1869

Wangaratta Chronicle - North East Regional Extra - - News -

IN the early hours of the morning on August 30, 1869, a brief but intense earth tremor shook Beechworth. Although it lasted only seconds, it caused buildings to shake. The tremor was heralded by a rumbling noise like a passing train, then glasses tinkled, cutlery rattled and jumped on shelves, beds shook, and buildings swayed.
